Snider cartridges were first produced in 1867. The early .577" Snider cartridges were made from a composite design using paper and brass foil with a stamped metallic base and primer. The design changed in the late-1870s to replicate the Martini-Henry drawn brass cartridge.

The Queensland Native Mounted Police were issued Snider rifles between 1866 and 1880.
