The ointment was patented in Sydney in 1866 by Isaac Josephson and sold for one shilling each.

It contained lard, beeswax and extracts of Marshmallow, Geebung and various stringy barks, iron barks, blue gums and red gums. It was touted as a cure for everything, from ‘Wounds of all Descriptions, Burns, Scalds, Chilblains, Soft Corns, Sunburns, Old Sores, Cuts, Chapped Hands, Blisters, Scurf’ to ‘Piles, Ulcers, Boils, Sore Eyes, Stings of Insects, Pimples, Chafings, Stiff Joints, Bad Legs, &c, &c.’ (The Chemist and Druggist, 15 March 1883).

----------
JOSEPHSON'S AUSTRALIAN OINTMENT.
Queensland Figaro and Punch (Brisbane), 24 September 1887: 7.
By Royal Letters Patent. The most useful ointment in the world bar none.
There was never yet anything invented that is really and intrinsically good, first-class, and in great demand, that was not imitated, or some spurious manufacture was not palmed on the public as the real thing. Now, since the introduction of Josephson's Australian Ointment to the public, it still stands unrivalled, because it has proved itself aU it professed to be.
We see published all kinds of preparations of the Eucalyptus in various forms, but the chief ingredient of Josephson's Ointment is the Eucalyptus, so that all these new fangled productions are old in comparison with Josephson's Ointment. In fact, they
have been finding out "Mare's Nests," while the pure and unadulterated essence and color of the Eucalyuptus is fully embodied in Josephson's Ointment.
Josephson's Ointment has been used by the public for so many years that it does not require puffing; it has worked its way and still holds its own, and yet stands the Premier Ointment in the Southern Hemisphere. But as many new arrivals have made Queensland their home, it maybe as well to let them know that there is such an article as Joseplison's Ointment, purely the production of the colony, composed of wild plants indigenous to the country and nowhere else, the principle of which is the Eucalyptus now so famed throughout the world. Josephson's Ointment is purely vegetable, and guaranteed free from all poisonous qualities. No artificial coloring, as the green color is extricated from the pure green plants, which defy imitation. The scent from the Eucalyptus is pleasant and natural, and Josephson's Ointment is free from all greasy smells so generally prevalent in salves.
May be had of all Chemists. Recollect the name and see that you get it. Name on all Pots. Sold all over Queensland. Pots 1s. each.
